About The Artist

My name is Shami Orkibi and I live in Patagonia, Arizona. I find it to be a truly wonderful place in which to live. Inspiration comes in abundance here from the earth, the sky, trees, animals, people and art. I paint Mandalas and other nature-related paintings. I use watercolors, ink and permanent markers on paper.

The word Mandala is taken from Sanskrit and it means: "A healing circle", "center", "A whole world". Mandala paintings have existed for many years, in different cultures with different forms.
I don't usually plan the course of my paintings; rather the process is spontaneous and immediate. A Mandala always has a strong center. For me being centered is of primary importance in art and in life.

Also, I have been enjoying making pottery for many years; the "center" is so basic when working with clay.

Over the years many people, places and events influenced my creativity. Recently I have been exposed to Butoh dance. Butoh is a rebellious, avant-garde dance, started in Japan in the 1950's. Usually the dancers in Butoh move very slowly with great care and attention. When dancing, I feel the spirit within expanding, a sense of timelessness and a strong, natural connection to the universe.

For me, there is a direct connection with dancing, painting and making pottery.
