Shami's World
Sunflower

The word "mandala" is taken from Sanskrit and it means: "A healing circle", "A whole world". Other interpretations are: "Center", "Circle". The mandala is a pattern with a very clear center. From that center grows the mandala's intricacy and power.

I draw mandalas on paper with permanent ink pens and on pottery with colored slips and stylus. I always start with a single dot at the center. The drawing then develops using patterns of leaves, flowers, trees, hearts, suns and more.

When I draw and paint the mandala it just seems to grow by itself, I don't pre-plan the design. I think sometimes when you don't really plan ahead interesting relationships between the conscious and the unconscious can be seen.
